The brightest galaxy loots its neighbors


The brightest galaxy in the universe swallowed at least three galaxies in its neighbor. The finding is important in determining that the galaxy is intensely shining using material from other galaxies.

W2246-0526, the super-bright galaxy, was discovered in 2015 by NASA's Wide Field Infrared Research Explorer (WISE). The galaxy is 12.4 billion light-years away and feeds a super-mass black hole in the center. W2246-0526 is by no means the largest or largest galaxy in the universe, but it appears 350 trillion times brighter than the Sun. Excessive shine remains a mystery to scientists.

New observations using the Atacama Large Millimeter / Millimeter Series (ALMA) revealed that the astounding brightness of the galaxy was fed by dust drawn from three small galaxies. The researchers found traces of dust as different as the smaller galaxies themselves contained material. The position and shape of the dust traces are consistent with how the material should flow if drawn from one galaxy to another.

"We are waiting for this feeding frenzy to continue for a while and we will wait for the galactic festival to continue for at least a few hundred million years." Tanio Diaz-Santos, the leading author of Universidad Diego Portales in Chile.

Galactic cannibalism is not uncommon. Scientists have long known that many large galaxies contain the remains of smaller galaxies. When galaxies are too close together, larger galaxies remain intact and retain their shape. But the smaller ones will be stripped separately and will be part of the larger galaxy due to intense gravity.

. We knew there were three companion galaxies from the previous data, but we have proven that there is no interaction between the neighbors and the central source, Di said Diaz-Santos. "We weren't looking for cannibalistic behavior, and we didn't expect it, but this deep dive at the ALMA observatory makes it very clear."
