After several years of development, Samsung finally showed a prototype smartphone with a flexible display. In the mass production of the conditional Galaxy F & M, only 2019 will be reached. The presentation was made after a similar innovation was shown by the start-up Royole, other brands developing flexible displays. Flexible smartphones can become a popular trend in the case of commercial success in the market.
Samsung Electronics showed a prototype of the company's first foldable, flexible display smartphone with Google. The presentation was held at the annual conference for developers (SDC 2018). Samsung also showed an updated interface for flexible displays, among other things, for the adapted One UI smartphones; Bixby voice aid ecosystem and cloud platform SmartThings for Internet of Things.
Flexible display smartphones are still an anonymous prototype, which can be called Galaxy X or Galaxy F. The price and the beginning of sales are also not disclosed. The commercial launch of the device is expected next year. Probably, the latest version of the smartphone or tablet phone was announced in January in Las Vegas, CES or in MWC in Barcelona in February.
Samsung left behind it for a few days, presenting the production version of the smartphone for a few days. In particular, similar developments are carried out, such as Huawei, Lenovo and LG. Likewise, Samsung plans to create various flexible images in the future. In the case of a successful commercial launch, flexible smartphones may be a trend in the mobile phone market in 2019, but high prices may hinder the large sale of such vehicles.
Tablet in your pocket
The two modes are presented in the presentation of prototype work and are equipped with two screens accordingly. As a matter of fact, Samsung showed that a smartphone and a tablet are twisted in a twisted hybrid. When folded, it is a familiar intelligent, only longer and thicker – a 4.6-inch display with a resolution of 1960×840 and a 21: 9 aspect ratio. When turned on, the smartphone turns into a tablet with a 7.3-inch AMOLED screen and a resolution of 2152×1536. The screen of such a tablet called the Infinity Flex Display.
Samsung Dong Jin Ko, President of Samsung Mobile, said it took many years for a flexible smartphone to be developed and un technically very difficult Samsung. The device is designed for folding and opening hundreds of times without any loss in the quality of the display. For the screen to be rounded, Samsung had to make the panel thinner than it was on any other device. This was achieved by reducing the thickness of the screen's polarizer. Here it is 45% thinner than other smartphones.
Justin Denison, Samsung's vice president of marketing, said in the presentation that “the gadget will be the foundation of future smartphones telefon and that the Infinity Flex screens are ısı the biggest step in mobile display technology over the last 10 years’. The developer emphasized that the production of the screen uses flexible and rigid special composite polymers. Resources Engadge noted that the flexible display module Infinity Flex is designed for these purposes, and that a protective layer with a special polymer that combines flexibility and power as well as a durable adhesive for fixing the screen has been designed.
It was noteworthy that Samsung showed two flexible smartphone prototypes at the beginning of the year. One of them had a 7.3-inch display inside, and the second was outside. The smartphone presented in November is the first type that initially had a higher chance of early commercialization. The Korean Herald, which also screened versions of external sources, also decided to mass production, but in the second generation.
Finally, a smartphone that looks like any other smartphone.

The main advantage of a flexible smartphone, in addition to turning into a tablet, the developer called the simultaneous operation technology on the Multiple Display Window on multiple screens adapted for a flexible display. Thus, applications running on a small "side" screen will automatically be transferred to the home screen with up to three active applications, viewing and working. The operation of this mode will present the user interface One UI that Samsung has provided in the presentation.
In addition to working with the Highly Effective Window, the interface allows you to put information into a region that is important for the user and separate the content region from the control region. At the same time, the controls in a UI will be located at the bottom of the screen, so it's easier to reach them on large smartphones, this applies to pop-up blocks that contain both individual buttons and interactive elements. Samsung has launched the open beta test of One UI in Germany, Korea and the US.
Simultaneously with Samsung's presentation in California, an Android Developers Summit conference was held. Google announced that Android mobile operating system now supports folding devices, and the Korean company became the first partner. Dave Burke, Google's vice president of development for Android, said in the presentation that the flexible-screen serial smartphone will be released in 2019, and that support for flexible displays will be made available to all such device manufacturers.
The development of flexible manufacturers Asian manufacturers say the last 5 years. Lenovo showed a smart wristband with a flexible display in 2016. LG has announced plans to launch a 65-inch TV, which can be folded to a flexible OLED display and a dedicated unit. Microsoft has issued a patent, and Huawei has promised to launch such a gadget in 2019. However, the first commercial product managed to offer American start Royole (Rouyu).
At the Beijing conference, Royole Corporation introduces its FlexPai flexible screen smartphone. The gadget is equipped with a 7.8-inch display in the open state and when folded, divided into three screens: front, back and side. The AMOLED screen has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and has only folded out in one direction, so Royole has gone according to the rejected Samsung scenario. At the same time, the exterior of the vehicle is not symmetrical – there is a large protrusion on one side of the screen with two cameras at a resolution of 20 and 16 Megapixels, as well as a flash.
Royole claims that he did a series of FlexPai screen tests before the presentation. Thus, the display passed more than 200 thousand tests for bending and bending as well as tensile and other types of deformation at various angles. A separate test-type crash test – the AMOLED panel fell from various heights. In total, Royole carried out almost 120 kinds of tests, lasting almost 1000 days.
In addition to the revolutionary screen, the developer launched the top-end fill – the latest QualcommSnapdragon processor from the 8-Series line, which supports 5G networks, built from 6 to 8 gigabytes of RAM & 128 & # 39; and in addition, there is a slot for memory cards. MicroSD. The smartphone runs the Royole Water OS firmware with Anavarid 9.0 and plans to invest $ 30 million in OS development initially. The pre-order for FlexPai began on November 1st, depending on the amount of gadget, RAM, and internal memory sold from $ 1,291 to $ 1,864.
