Before the semi-finals started, many journalists and experts were betting on Manchester City as the winner of the entire Champions League (see how they bet). Internet users also cited PSG as the winner, largely. Before the match, it was possible to assume that the winner of this pair would be a solid candidate for the final victory.
In the first match in Paris, the Citizens prevailed after the weak halftime. The match ended with a 2-1 score, but it was PSG who opened the score for most of the match and controlled things on the pitch. City woke up in the second half, besieging the home’s goal, and eventually gathered the ball into the net twice. Such progress was very comfortable for Pep Guardiola’s accusations before the rematch at his stadium.
The aura of the game … although it was winter, it was very hot at the beginning of the match, in the 7th minute, Zinczenko played the ball with his hand in his own penalty area and the referee pointed to the 11th meter. The decision was reversed after the VAR was verified.
A few minutes later, the Citizens launched a swift counterattack allowing Zinchenko to play for Bruyne. He took a shot but the ball was blocked. Mahrez then moved quickly and opened the outcome of the conflict. The goalkeeper of The Citizens deserves a lot of applause for this action because he was the one who started the whole situation.
Parisians did not give up. They continued to put pressure on their opponent, knowing they had to bet on a single card to change the course of the promotion. At the 21st minute, Di Maria took advantage of a mistake made by one of the home players, but missed the target. He had a half-empty goal in front of him, and he might have been glad to get even, as if he had sent the ball to the side of a meter.
Then the pace of the game slowed down a little. PSG tried to take the initiative on the field, but the players of Coach Pochettino were unable to break City’s defense and were unable to shoot at the target during the first half.
The match was quieter in the second half. In the 63rd minute, Manchester again showed the book’s counterattack. A few quick and long passes allowed the Citizens to find themselves in the penalty area of their opponents. The most important move on the target was to send Foden’s ball to Marhez, who finished without hesitation with an effective shot.
The snow was melting from the grass, but the atmosphere on the field was incredibly high. The contention began with Di Maria’s unsportsmanlike behavior, Fernandinho’s foot stepped on the sideline and the referee punished the Argentine with a red card. PSG players started protesting and a controversy ensued. After a while, the atmosphere returned to normal.
Playing with numbers, City created new situations for themselves. Marhez was close to the hat, a minute later Foden could have taken the lead, but from 16 yards his shot hit the post.
