Xiaomi shares more details about its upcoming Civi phone

Xiaomi is now only hours away from the official announcement event on September 27 for the new Civi series smartphones. We’ve seen a few renders and teasers for at least one device from the new family, and quite a few specs have been said.

Now Xiaomi has taken to Weibo once again with additional teasers, providing some extra information and reaffirming some things we already know. Let’s start with the hardware first – the Snapdragon 778G chipset has been officially confirmed, and so is the 4500mAh battery capacity that posters claim will offer “the longest battery life on a Xiaomi phone this year”. Then again, our translation may not be perfect.

The same goes for the other official banner proposing three major software updates and three years of support for the Xiaomi Civi. If we wrap up the officially verified information, we already knew some basic dimensions for the first Civi – it will be 71.5 mm wide, 6.98 mm thin and weighs 166 grams. It looks like the metal frame in the middle will likely be extremely thin, measuring just 1.5mm and the chin below the screen measuring just 2.25mm. Again, we hope our rough translations are correct here.

Finally, Xiaomi has also shared a fairly long and comprehensive infographic explaining how facial “beautification” filtering will work in Civi. As far as we’ve come to understand, Xiaomi has used machine learning to train a complex neural network to “re-depict” or reconstruct facial features per pixel. The aim is to preserve the true skin texture rather than just destroy it.

Apparently, the entire system actually has multiple moving parts. The main model was trained by photographers using professional retouching on tens of thousands of women’s photos taken from different angles. The point of the neural network is to try to emulate the actual retouching process rather than a more traditional “scrubbing” approach on defects in isolation. During training, the first neural network was also controlled by a second network specially trained to distinguish between the original images and computer-generated images during training.

This feature clearly seems to be geared towards more feminine facial features, which makes us wonder how specifically the neural network is targeted in its current state. How well it handles Caucasian features or darker complexions we’ll have to test for ourselves eventually. Pretty interesting stuff though.

Meanwhile, we already know that the Xiaomi Civi will have a 32MP selfie camera with autofocus. The interest in selfies and beautification is not surprising.

To wrap things up, some expected but not officially confirmed features on the Civi include a 6.55″ FullHD+ 120Hz display, 55W charging, 256GB storage and MIUI 12.5.1. Plus Dolby Atmos enhancement, possibly a stereo speaker setup.
