A wide-ranging government mandate will require vaccination of workers in health and education.

The mandate, announced by Covid-19 Minister Chris Hipkins after the cabinet met on Monday, will affect hundreds of thousands of workers, including all teachers and DHB staff.

This is the strictest ever requirement of the Government’s vaccination initiative, but it is not unique.

Recruitments for education workers have been announced in the US states of Washington and New York and the Australian states of Victoria, New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

Many other countries have announced similar mandates for those working in government posts and key industries. Examples include:

Australia

Covid-19 vaccinations are mandatory for aged care workers and quarantine workers across Australia.

Some states also have vaccine mandates.

Queensland and New South Wales introduced rules requiring healthcare workers to be vaccinated.

Victoria has mandated the vaccination of construction workers, and Western Australia requires people working in mining, oil and gas exploration to receive their first dose by 1 December.

Canada

Canada has implemented some of the strictest vaccine mandate policies in the world.

All federal employees must be vaccinated by the end of October, and if they are not, they will be on unpaid leave.

This move raised concerns about staff shortages, especially in the healthcare industry, when the rule came into effect.

All passengers on plane, rail and ferries will also need full proof of vaccination after the end of October.

Italy

The Italian Government will require all employees in the public service and private sector to show proof of vaccination through a “green pass” digital vaccination certificate.

From October 15, any employee who does not present his certificate will be suspended for up to five days without charge, but will not be dismissed.

Holland

Dutch citizens must have a Covid-19 vaccine health card to enter venues such as bars, restaurants and theaters from 25 September.

Greece

Greece has demanded vaccinations for health workers and required weekly testing for all unvaccinated workers.

All public and private workers will have to carry a vaccination certificate or pay out-of-pocket for weekly tests.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica made vaccinations mandatory for all government employees in September, although no deadline has been set.
