Israel's tough education minister offers PM ultimatum

Naftali Bennett threatens to withdraw from the coalition government if there is no defense portfolio

Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett has threatened to withdraw the Jewish House party from the government if Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has not been given the defense portfolio after his resignation.

"If Bennett does not make the defense minister, his party will throw bolts from the ruling coalition," Jerusalem Post quoted a party official as saying.

Earlier, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said a senior Likud official could undertake a defense portfolio following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's release of Lieberman.

On Wednesday, Lieberman resigned from his post one day after the ceasefire between the Palestinian resistance groups and Israel resigned.

Lieberman announced his resignation at a closed-door meeting of Yisrael Beiteinu party members.

If Bennet's Jewish homeland was withdrawn from government, Netanyahu's current Likud-led coalition would lose the majority of the Knesset, which would leave the parliament defenseless against the vote of precariousness.
