According to his boss, Micky Hammond, conditional rider Aidan MacDonald made positive progress overnight after being hospitalized with internal bleeding.

The 21-year-old MacDonald had been hospitalized after his fall in Hexham last month before he was released, but was taken by ambulance to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough after his fall in Middleham on Thursday.

In a statement from the Injured Jockeys Fund on Thursday, it was announced that MacDonald was in a “critical condition” and was being treated for a suspected dissection of the carotid artery that brings blood from the heart to the front of the brain.

“Update on Aidan Macdonald – the bleeding has now cleared up. He speaks in sentences and can feel and move his fingers,” Hammond wrote on Twitter on Friday.

“We have a long way to go, but neither warrior, we still want privacy for his family in this difficult time. But what positive news.”

MacDonald was hospitalized on 18 March after a heavy drop in the conditional jockey ‘mare’ hurdle on the last third flight while riding the 22-1 shot Russian Royale for Hammond.

The 7lb claimer permanently joined Middleham-based Hammond in 2016, having previously been out to the garden and scored three wins.

Originally from the Scottish border Hawick and started pony racing.
