Many refugees want to leave the Taliban’s Afghanistan for Germany – which is why the German government needs contact with the Taliban. They too are now making clear demands.
After coming to power in Afghanistan, the Taliban requests official diplomatic relations and financial assistance from Germany. “We want strong and official diplomatic relations with Germany,” said Sabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman from Welt am Sonntag. Accordingly, the Taliban are asking the German government and other countries to provide financial support, humanitarian aid and cooperation in the fields of health, agriculture and education.
Mujahid told the newspaper that Germans are always welcome in Afghanistan. Even during the reign of nearly a hundred years ago, the Germans were doing very well in Afghanistan. “Unfortunately, they joined the Americans later on. But this is now forgiven,” said Mujahid.
Addicted to negotiations because of protection seekers
Germany relies on talks with the Taliban as it wants to ensure that more people seeking protection leave the country after the military evacuation operation ends. Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said a few days ago, “If it were politically feasible and the security situation permits, Germany should again have its own embassy in Kabul.” The SPD politician also stressed that diplomatic representation does not mean recognition of a Taliban government.
The EU has already accepted the Taliban’s terms for diplomatic relations and assistance.
The German government closed the embassy in Kabul after the victorious advance of the Taliban. Ambassador Markus Potzel was sent to Doha, Qatar, to meet with the Islamists. The political office of the Taliban is located in the capital of the Gulf emirate, which acts as a kind of foreign ministry. However, the first Taliban representatives returned to Afghanistan from Doha. Therefore, there are considerations on how to build a close relationship with new managers.
