Porsche: “enormous” demand for Taycan electric car

At the IAA Mobility trade show in Munich, Porsche boss Oliver Blume highlighted the level of interest in the Taycan electric car. In the Taycan Cross Turismo station wagon variant, the waiting period of the model series, which has been offered as a sports sedan at the end of 2019 since this year, has recently increased from four months to six months.

“Our original production capacity for the Taycan was 20,000 this year – that’s how much we sold in the first half of the year,” Blume said in a panel discussion at IAA Mobility. Incoming orders are also very large in China. Blume, who is also responsible for production at Volkswagen, added that the group, like other automakers, is struggling with computer chip shortages and has received more orders than it can afford.

Porsche delivered 153,656 vehicles worldwide in the first six months of the year, up 31 percent from the previous year. Significantly increased demand has spread to all model lines. The Taycan series, with the delivery of 19,822 vehicles, remained just below the level of 2020 after the first half of the year. The youngest member of the model range came in line with the iconic 911 sports car, with 20,611 units delivered.

Porsche’s electric cars are available in various versions with different performance and range. Base prices for Taycan models start at €85,500 and go up to just under €188,000. Porsche introduces its first battery-powered vehicles with particularly sporty and fast charging technology. The focus is not on the maximum range, but up to 484 kilometers according to the WLTP standard, depending on the model. The Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo start the new model year with changes in September. Technical optimizations improve range in everyday life. Other key innovations are the deeper integration of Android Auto and “Remote Parking Assistance”.

The huge demand for the Taycan was already evident in the first few months after its launch. Porsche therefore decided to rapidly increase its production capacity. The company doesn’t disclose how many Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo it can produce per year – but reports indicate that there are currently 40,000 vehicles. Other electric vehicles will follow the Taycan, from now on the next-generation compact SUV Macan on the new electric car platform PPE (Premium Platform Electric), developed in partnership with sister company Audi, in 2022.

At the IAA, Blume confirmed that Porsche should quickly focus on electromobility and lower CO2 emissions. “Our plan is to sell half of our electric vehicles to our customers by 2025. It should be 80 percent by the end of the decade,” the manager said. “We want to be CO2 neutral by 2030. We evaluate the entire value chain there. We start with the development of our vehicles using sustainable materials.”
