Second Case of Rat Hepatitis in People Reported in Hong Kong

Cases of human rat hepatitis are becoming an alarming cause for public health professionals. In two reported cases, it is now included in the list of diseases that can be transferred from mice to humans.
Human Rat Hepatitis in Hong Kong
Only last September, the first example of human rat hepatitis was reported in a 56-year-old man from Hong Kong who lived in unhealthy conditions. After the study, it was thought that the human was living near a garbage chute where the rat was found and therefore the disease was caused by the food or water consumed.
Due to the reported case, authorities have checked the possibility of other possible cases of rat hepatitis in humans in recent years, so they examined blood tests of 73 people who were positive for anti-HEV immunoglobulin but negative for human HEV nucleic acid. Genetic sequencing revealed that the virus detected in another patient, a 70-year-old woman, was very similar to the virus in the first case.
Second Case of Rat Hepatitis in Humans
Clearly, the woman experienced abdominal pain, palpitations, headache, anorexia and weakness on 1 May 2017. He was taken to a state hospital on May 4 and was released on May 8. Blood tests were performed on May 5th. .
Interestingly, the woman, like the man in the first case, lived in Wong Tai Sin District. In fact, they lived about two miles away. However, she could not remember that she was in any contact with rodents or rodent feces, unlike the man in the first case who reported that rodent feces was seen at home.
In addition, both patients were considered to be immunosuppressed and thus their bodies could be found to be easier to enter the virus.
