HU doctor reports differences between dengue, chikungunya and zika

The climate prevailing at this time of year is hot and humid. Mosquito Aedes aegypti is suitable for the development of environment, dang, chikungunya and zika diseases such as vector. In addition to the transmission of these diseases by the same insect, there are some common symptoms that make the diagnosis difficult.

According to the infectious doctor of the Jundiaí University Hospital (HU), Saulo Duarte Passos, small differences can be used as a criterion for differentiation. According to him, danga is the most serious disease compared with chikungunya and zika. Symptoms include fever, body aches (muscle), headache and eyes, shortness of breath, skin spots and discomfort. In more severe cases, danga can cause death as a result of bleeding.

Chikungunya causes fever and pain in the body, but the pain is especially concentrated in the joints. Symptoms usually last for two weeks, but may last for months. "Chikungunya greatly affects the quality of life of patients because of the persistence of pain. Deaths are rare," says the doctor.

Zika does not cause symptoms most of the time, and when any symptoms occur, it is usually low fever, red eyes and characteristic itching. ”Because the symptoms are more common, the disease is often confused with an allergy,“ explains Saulo. Zika rarely causes death and symptoms for an average of seven days. However, it is important to remember that zica fever is associated with a neurological syndrome that causes paralysis, Guillain-Barré syndrome and microcephaly.

Since there is no specific drug, care for patients with three diseases is practically the same. The advice is that these patients continue to rest and consume too much fluid. Your doctor may prescribe painkillers in your formula, except those containing acetylsalicylic acid, which may trigger bleeding.

There is already a vaccine for dengue, but not for chikungunya and zika. The doctor explains that the dengue vaccine has been mentioned even for those who have the disease, but it only reminds us that it is only available on the private network. Therefore, the best way to prevent these diseases is to remove the pockets of the Aedes aegypti development as standing water deposition sites.
