One PASSIONATE about saving the Great Barrier Reef from the disposable plastic and the conscious message made 10-year-old Sid Crawshaw a champion of the reef.
Sid received the 2018 Reef Champion Award: Reef Youth under 15 years old to reduce disposable plastic pipettes on Wednesday night at Yeppoon.
Sid said he was a little upset about the night.
”At first I was very nervous but I calmed down to enjoy the moment because I was happy to be surprised and win, Sid said Sid.
"It just felt like an accident itself to be there for me."
Sid appreciated the night in the company of other award winners and candidates.
He also said that he liked Aboriginal dance in the night.
The award ceremony was welcomed by the Reef Alliance with the support of state and national governments.
The aim was to recognize the work of farmers, extension officials, youth and community groups for their work on the Great Barrier Reef.
Sid wanted to get others a message that everything a person can do to help reduce plastic is a good start.
"If everyone does something small to help, we will contribute to the solution of the larger plastic problems in our waterways." Said.
”When I found out there was almost a plastic island in the Pacific Ocean, I wanted to do something to try and make it bigger.“
Rebecca French, the director of the Fitzroy Basin Association's Shootout, said that she was fascinated by the fact that a very special prize came from the judges.
"Basically, they've made a category where someone is trying hard to do what they're doing." Said.
"This is the first category for this award, and Sid is a good role model."
For the next year, Sid has plans to approach more businesses to maintain a single-use straw campaign.
He was introduced to the naval biologist Nicole Nash, who was living in Cairns at the awards ceremony and launched the campaign The Last Straw.
Nicole wins the 2018 Reef Champion Award: Reef Junior Champion at the ceremony.
"I talked with Nicole during the night and next year I'll work together to reduce the use of disposable pipettes,. Said Sid.
